Viper: Iomega to strike again

Removable media stores 1.3 Gbytes

Iomega Corp. plans to sink its fangs into the high end of the
removable-storage market with a new high-capacity drive, code-named Viper.
According to sources, attendees at PC Expo in New York this month will get =
a
look at the drive, which will use a 1-Gbyte hard disk cartridge.

Sources said the 3.5-inch drive, which is slated for release in the third
quarter, is expected to carry a price of $575 for an external version and
$500 for an internal kit.

Like products from rival SyQuest Technology Inc. of Fremont, Calif.,
Iomega's drive will use Winchester hard disk cartridges instead of the
floppy-based technologies used in Iomega's Bernoulli, floptical and Zip
products. Sources said the new 3.5-inch, single-platter, 1-Gbyte cartridges
will cost about $100 each.

In addition to higher capacity, the Viper will offer pre-press and digital
video users significant performance improvements. According to sources, the
Fast SCSI-2 mechanism will have an uninterrupted sustained data transfer
rate of 3.5 to 5 Mbytes per second, more than double the speed of SyQuest's
270-Mbyte SQ3270 mechanism. It will offer an average seek time of 14
milliseconds, comparable to the SQ3270.

"Just the increased capacity alone will attract the high-end user," said
Geoff Westerfield, hardware manager at ComputerWare of Palo Alto, Calif. He
said users will prefer to store mission-critical data using familiar
Winchester technology rather than the more recent Zip cartridges. "It will
be popular."

The stylish drive will offer a pair of high-performance 50-pin SCSI ports,
sources said, and use a small, external AC power adapter.

With the Viper, Iomega of Roy, Utah, reportedly will address a number of
user criticisms of its entry-level Zip drive. The unit is designed to sit
horizontally on the desktop, rather than vertically. It has rubber feet and
can be stacked.

Sources said the new drive will also add a rear-panel on-off switch and a
push-button SCSI-address switch. Users of the Zip drive can select between
only two identification numbers.

According to sources, the shape of the Viper cartridge is easier to handle
and insert than SyQuest-compatible models. Unlike SyQuest's square cartridg=
e
design, one side of the Viper disk will have a curved edge and metal
shutter. The Viper drive and media will not be compatible with Bernoulli,
Zip or SyQuest formats.

As it did with the Zip, Iomega reportedly will bundle the drive with
formatting and backup software. The drive will automatically mount
cartridges when inserted, sources said.

"Viper will give SyQuest fits," said analyst Bill Frank, president of Augur
Visions Inc. of Los Altos, Calif. He said, however, that Iomega's current
problems meeting the heavy demand for Zip drives and media may make users
approach the Viper with caution.

"It's very aggressive pricing, but it's one thing to set a price and anothe=
r
to actually build them in quantity," Frank said.

Iomega acknowledged it is developing a drive with high capacity and
performance but would not comment on product details.
